Dysphoric Milk Ejection Reflex:
We All Need to Know About This
D-MER or Dysphoric Milk Ejection Reflex is a newly recognized condition that affects breastfeeding women. D-MER is a hormonal imbalance - a physiologic phenomenon - that causes a dramatic drop in Dopamine just before a mother’s milk lets down. When this happens moms experience overwhelming negative feelings such as hopelessness, overwhelm, anxiety, nausea, anger and more. The feelings fade as the milk is released, but may return just prior to each wave of let down during a feeding. This condition affects nearly 10% of breastfeeding women.
